The Unsung Heroes: Comanche Language and Cultural Preservation Committee's Connection to World War II

In the midst of World War II, an elite group of young men from the Comanche Nation played a crucial role in the war effort. Known as the Comanche Code Talkers, these brave warriors used their fluency in the Comanche language to send coded messages that confused and disoriented the enemy, ultimately contributing to the Allied victory.

The Comanche Language & Cultural Preservation Committee (CLCPC) proudly acknowledges the sacrifices of these men who were trained in communications by the Army. Seventeen young men from Oklahoma were selected for this top-secret mission, but only fourteen were deployed to the European theater. The group consisted of Roderick 'Dick' Red Elk, Simmons Parker, Larry Saupitty, Melvin Permansu, Willie Yackeschi, Charles Chibitty, Willington Mihecoby, Morris Sunrise, Perry Noyebad, Haddon Codynah, Robert Holder, Clifford Otitivo, Forrest Kassanavoid, and Elgin Red Elk.

The Comanche Code Talkers' contribution to the war effort was significant. Their unique ability to send coded messages in their native language made it impossible for enemy forces to decipher the information. This skill allowed them to convey critical information quickly and efficiently, giving the Allies a strategic advantage on the battlefield.

In recognition of their contributions, the French Government honored three Comanche Code Talkers – Albert Nahquaddy, Anthony Tabbytite, and Ralph Wahnee – with the 'Chevalier de L'Order National du Merite' in 1989. Unfortunately, the United States government has not offered similar recognition to these heroes.

The legacy of the Comanche Code Talkers serves as a testament to the bravery and resilience of Native American soldiers who served during World War II. Their story is a reminder that even in the darkest times, there are unsung heroes who make significant contributions to the war effort. The Comanche Language & Cultural Preservation Committee continues to honor these men's sacrifices and ensure their legacy lives on through cultural preservation efforts.

The CLCPC also supports other important initiatives, including the Numu Turetu Early Childhood Development Center (coming soon), the Comanche Nation Childcare Center in Apache, Oklahoma, and community health programs such as Community Health Representative, Emergency Medical Service, and Fire Program. Additionally, the committee advocates for Native American Graves Protection & Repatriation Act.

As we pay tribute to the Comanche Code Talkers, we also honor the sacrifices of our ancestors who paved the way for us. We remember their bravery, their resilience, and their unwavering commitment to preserving our language and culture. As Comanche people, we will always honor them, just as they honored us by fighting for our country during World War II.
